Amy Farelly – Mathematics SLE

a-farelly1

Area of Expertise : Mathematics

Amy works as an Assistant Head Teacher and currently has a year 4 class. As a passionate, enthusiastic and outstanding teacher, she has a wealth of experience and ideas for teaching exciting, stimulating lessons to enrich and inspire the children with a deeper understanding of their learning.

Amy has headed the creation and maintenance of effective environments which promote good and outstanding teaching; effective learning; good behaviour and high standards of achievement.  As a coach, mentor and assessor, she has supported and led teachers to improve the quality of their teaching from students to NQTs and experienced teachers. When working with the maths specialist and a year team at another Junior School, Amy was able to support the planning and teaching process to enable children to achieve greater progress and attainment in maths; this was evidenced in the children’s accelerated progression following their team planning sessions.

Through Amy’s leadership of mathematics, she developed a calculation policy and a progressive steps ladder to ensure all children work towards mastery of mental mathematics skills before moving on to written methods. Teachers feel this has supported their teaching and helped them to understand the order in which to teach mathematical concepts. Amy also wrote an Assessment without Levels tracking system in order to track the children’s progression against the new curriculum, gaining – this started with mathematics and is now used in her school by all teachers across all of the core subjects.
